Detox Bath Recipe

Bring the healing power of mineral hot springs to your own bathtub!

We are exposed to a multitude of toxins every day in our air, food, everyday products, and even the water supply. 84,000 chemicals are legally for sale in the US - These dangerous compounds can cause irritation, inflammation, and degrade body tissues after too much exposure. Normally, the body is able to remove these toxins as a natural bodily process. However, the overwhelming onslaught of toxins in the environment today can compromise its capacity to process them, leaving your system susceptible. When your toxic load ramps up, it manifests into sickness and disease. I, along with many medical experts believe that toxic chemical exposure is the root of many illnesses and fertility issues today.

In times past, water was always considered healing, those who were frail and sickly were sent to the shore for healing. Through the ages, and even in modern day, people ventured to the hot springs for medical purposes. The hot water and high mineral content of the springs is known to bring healing. Hot springs often contain high mineral content, and the heat increases circulation and absorption of minerals in the water into the body. A detox bath is essentially a healing hot spring brought conveniently into your home!

To summarize: the detoxifying organs (liver, kidneys, lymph..) are in desperate need of help. Regular detox baths can drastically reduce the bodies toxic load by safely absorbing and pulling them out of the skins tissue, and also replenishing the bodies mineral levels which can have a profound impact on many systems of the body.

I have to adress the water crisis first, because this healing bath will be mostly for naught if it is done in unfiltered water that is filled with all manner of toxins, pesticides, heavy metals and the dreaded FLUORIDE. Fluoride is a classified neurotoxin and is added in purposefully to 70% of public water supplies. A filter is a necessity if you want to truly experience the benefits of detox baths. I’ve finally settled on a shower filter that I LOVE - most shower filters only remove chlorine, but the multi-stage ProPUR filter reduces over 200 contaminants including VOC’s, heavy metals, lead, pesticides, chloramines, chlorine, fluoride, herbicides, pharmaceuticals and odor. There is a slight inconvenience from having to fill your tub with the shower head, but I will gladly do it if that means my water is clean and safe for myself and my kids. The filter is only around $60, but if it is not something that is in your budget and you still want to try detox baths, I recommend using at least 1 cup of bentonite clay or activated charcoal in the bath to absorb all the excess chemicals in the water. If going this route, add the clay or charcoal in first, mix it in a give it a minute or two to absorb. Then proceed with adding in the rest of the ingredients.

Magnesium bath flakes are a form of transdermal magnesium, a method of mineral supplementation designed to deliver magnesium through the skin for rapid absorption into the cells. Ancient Minerals bath flakes are the dry flakes of magnesium chloride and other naturally-occurring trace minerals in a convenient and economical form for utilization in baths and foot soaks. Ancient minerals magnesium is especially highly effective for healing skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis and other skin conditions. Magnesium regulates over 300 enzymes in the body that play key roles in organizing hundreds of bodily functions like energy levels, muscle control, electrical impulses, and the ability to detox.

Three quarters of Americans do not meet the recommended daily intake of magnesium, yet many continue to be unaware of the role magnesium and hypomagnesemia play in optimal health.Chronic disease is on the rise in industrialized nations, and dietary magnesium levels are at an all time low. Making a connection rooted in previous decades of study, scientists have begun to explore magnesium as a possible “missing link” behind several of today’s most troubling illnesses.

Oral forms of magnesium have been shown to have as low as a 4% absorption rate. Magnesium bath flakes by Ancient Minerals bypass the irritation and side effects associated with oral magnesium and are instead absorbed through the body’s largest organ: the skin.

Magnesium chloride flakes, a form of transdermal magnesium, are incredible - here’s a few more reasons why.

≋ Easy and convenient

≋ Directly available to muscular systems that require magnesium to function

≋ Delivered through the skin, and therefore easily assimilated and well-tolerated

≋ Contains essential elements that no longer exist in ocean water today, and is totally free of any toxic contaminant

≋ Strengthens detox pathways throughout the body allowing it to purify itself from heavy metals and other unwanted waste

≋ Aligns the body’s electromagnetic field

I only recommend Ancient Minerals magnesium flakes due to their ULTRA pure quality and sourcing.

BORAX (Boron)

Borax, or sodium borate is an essential trace element that most people are chronically deficient in. Being low in this mineral allows a host of chronic diseases to take hold. Like magnesium, this mineral is found in the healing mineralized waters around the world that have been labelled ‘Miracle Waters’ - where folk are reported to be healed of a host of chronic conditions.

Borax has excellent antiseptic, antifungal, and antiviral properties with mild antibacterial action. It is essential for the integrity and function of cell walls, and the way signals are transmitted across membranes. Borax is essential for healthy bone and joint function, regulating the absorption and metabolism of calcium, magnesium and phosphorus through its influence on the parathyroid glands. Boron deficiency causes the parathyroids to become overactive, releasing too much parathyroid hormone which raises the blood level of calcium by releasing calcium from bones and teeth. This may lead to osteoarthritis and other forms of arthritis, osteoporosis and tooth decay. With advancing age high blood levels of calcium lead to calcification of soft tissues causing muscle contractions and stiffness; calcification of endocrine glands, especially the pineal gland and the ovaries; arteriosclerosis, kidney stones, and calcification of the kidneys ultimately leading to kidney failure. Boron deficiency combined with magnesium deficiency is especially damaging to the bones and teeth.

Calcium and Magnesium that should be present in bones and teeth is lost in the urine as a result of Boron deficiency. Supplementing Borax will reduce the daily loss of calcium by nearly 50% resulting in healthy teeth and bones! The beneficial effect of borax on bones seems to be due to a higher boron content of the bones which makes them harder, and a normalisation of sex hormones which stimulates the growth of new bone

A few interesting facts about Borax and it’s effects on candida and flouride

Borax and Candida

In normal healthy conditions Candida exists as harmless oval yeast cells. Under favourable conditions it can develop into chains of elongated cells and finally strongly invasive long, narrow and tube-like filaments which damage the intestinal wall, and cause inflammation and Leaky Gut Syndrome. Candida can also form tough layers of biofilm. This same study shows that borax inhibits the formation of biofilms and also the transformation of harmless yeast cells into invasive hyphal form.

Borax and Fluoride

Borax can also be used to remove accumulated fluoride and heavy metals from the body. Fluoride not only causes bones to deteriorate, but also the pineal gland to calcify and the thyroid to become underactive. Borax reacts with fluoride ions to form boron fluorides which are then excreted in the urine.

I’ll stop there, but the list goes on! I use this high quality sodium borate from Pure Organic

If I had to pick five, no, THREE items to put in a first aid kit, bentonite clay would be one of them! I am a strong believer in the drawing and healing power of clay and it definitely belongs in every detox bath. Cultures throughout the world still used bentonite clay, many EAT it for it’s mineral content and it’s ability to bind toxins and carry them safely out of the body. I always share that if you look in nature, when an animal is sick or poisoned, it will stop eating and instinctively find a clay bed and lick up the clay to remove poisons from their systems. It has the most INSANE drawing effect, more so than any other binder. Clay is highly beneficial methods for detoxification, especially for cases of heavy metal poisoning and radiation buildup.

Bentonite has a high concentration of minerals including silica, calcium, magnesium, sodium, iron, and potassium. It binds and permanently absorbs toxins, heavy metals, impurities, and chemicals. It produces an electrical charge when hydrated and absorbs things that are negatively charged. Upon contact with fluid its electrical components change, carrying a strong negative charge which bonds to the positive charge in many toxins.

When it comes in contact with a toxin, chemical, or heavy metal, the clay will absorb the toxin and release its minerals for the body to use. Bentonite also helps get oxygen to cells as it pulls excess hydrogen and allows the cells to replace it with oxygen instead. Clay is a powerhouse and my number one recommendation for releasing the toxic burden of the body.

Living Clay brand is the best of the best and I use this for baths and for internal use. I do sometimes use this cheaper Aztec clay for baths and save the higher quality clay for internal use.

There are plenty of detox bath recipes out there utilizing all sorts of ingredients - but these particular ingredients are my absolute top picks when it comes to a powerful and effective detox. Adding in a few drops of essential oils that fit your needs are a great idea as well. Here’s some ideas of what essential oils you could use:

≋ For detoxification: Lemon; Juniper; Patchouli.

≋ For joint inflammation: Helichrysum; Turmeric; Myrrh.

≋ For depression, anxiety, stress: Lavender; Sandalwood; Frankincense.

≋ For skin conditions: Lavender, Tea tree; Roman Chamomile.

≋ For pain-relief: Peppermint; Clove; Cypress.

If you’re thinking of using any of these for children, please look up the individual oil to check for safety. Off the top of my head, peppermint and eucalyptus and some of the “hot” oils are usually not recommended for kids.

Since oil does not mix with water, it’s a good idea to mix the EOs to a small amount of a carrier oil before adding it to the tub.

Here is the recipe! Keep in mind, this is just an estimate, as I am not factoring in the amount of water in the bathtub, but the more of each ingredient that you use, the stronger the concentration, and therefore, the more powerful detoxing effect it will have. I do not use an overwhelming amount (even though that would be a great idea) because it can be expensive to keep these products in stock in the house so I try to stretch them a bit. Here is what goes into a typical bath in our home:

1/2 cup Bentonite Clay

1 cup Magnesium Flakes

1/2 cup Borax

1/2 cup Sodium Bicarbonate

5 drops Essential Oil

To avoid clumping due to the clay, I always add that in first, sprinkling it on top and then immediately mixing it in with my hand. I also use this handy little mesh strain for the drain to catch any small clumps afterwards.
